Publish Date: October 11, 2026

MuiGrate FRP gratings provide corrosion-resistant, non-conductive and anti-slip access surfaces for walkways, platforms, drains, trenches, treatment plants, industrial facilities, data centres, substations, solar installations and construction sites.

Mui Fatt was the first maker of moulded FRP grating in Malaysia, and makes it in Port Klang, Selangor.

MuiGrate is available in both moulded and pultruded FRP grating. Moulded grating provides strength in both directions through its one-piece open-mesh construction, while pultruded grating uses load-bearing bars running in one direction for applications where one-way span performance is important.

Gratings can be factory cut to the required dimensions, helping contractors, councils and industrial users avoid cutting full panels on site.

MuiGrate FRP Gratings in Malaysia

MuiGrate is Mui Fatt's range of fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) grating and related access products. FRP grating does not rust, is resistant to many corrosive environments and is non-conductive, making it suitable for applications where conventional steel grating may require more maintenance or where electrical insulation is important.

The range includes moulded FRP grating, pultruded FRP grating, stair treads, FRP manhole and sump covers, light-duty septic tank manhole covers and site safety floor sheets for temporary walkways.

MuiGrate gratings are intended for pedestrian traffic in accordance with BS 4592 and are not for vehicle loads.

Moulded FRP Grating

Moulded FRP grating is manufactured as a one-piece open-mesh panel, with reinforcing fibres running in both directions. This gives the grating two-way strength without welded joints. The open mesh also allows water and other liquids to drain through the walking surface.

Moulded grating is available in different thicknesses, mesh configurations and open areas. Standard panels can be cut at the factory to suit the required width and length, including pipe cut-outs and other shapes where required.

Moulded vs Pultruded FRP Grating

Factor Moulded Pultruded
Chemical resistance Excellent Good
Two-way strength Excellent Not recommended
One-way strength Very good Excellent
Impact resistance Excellent Average
Open area 38–69% 50–60%
Pipe penetrations Excellent Average

In simple terms, pultruded grating is suited to applications where the load needs to span further in one direction. Moulded grating provides strength in both directions, better impact resistance and greater flexibility when cutting around pipes and other penetrations.

FRP Grating Load and Support Span

Moulded FRP grating support span depends on the grating thickness, model and applied load. The following values are for pedestrian-use moulded grating under the specified static loading conditions.

Model 100 kg Foot Traffic 500 kg 1000 kg
MG25(38/38) Up to 610 mm Up to 457 mm Not recommended
MG25(25/100) Up to 610 mm Up to 457 mm Not recommended
MG25(20/20) Up to 610 mm Up to 457 mm Not recommended
MG30(38/38) Up to 914 mm Up to 610 mm Up to 457 mm
MG38(38/38) Up to 1219 mm Up to 914 mm Up to 610 mm
MG38(20/20) Up to 1219 mm Up to 914 mm Up to 610 mm
MG50(38/38) Up to 1372 mm Up to 1219 mm Up to 914 mm

For typical walkways, the guidance is to use 25 mm grating on supports at up to 610 mm spacing and 38 mm grating on supports at up to 914 mm spacing.

The load values are based on L/100 (1%) deflection and are average values with a ±15% variation for static loads at room temperature. A design safety factor of 2.0 is used for creep under long-term load.

Span means the clear distance between the ledge faces. Leave at least 50 mm of ledge on each side. The grating size should be measured from wall to wall across the recess.

All MuiGrate gratings are for pedestrian traffic only in accordance with BS 4592. They are not intended for vehicle loads.

Technical Expertise and Attribution

Technical specifications and product information on this page are attributed to Danny Ng Shin Lai, Director & Lead Composite Technical Specialist, and the Mui Fatt Technical Engineering Support Team.

Danny Ng studied Materials Science and Engineering at UC Berkeley and oversees technical design, composite fabrication standards, engineering design and technical compliance for FRP/GRP products.

For FRP grating selection, the technical team considers factors including the grating type, support span, loading requirements, chemical exposure, surface requirements and installation conditions.

Grating Type and Support Span

The choice between moulded and pultruded grating depends on how the grating will be supported and loaded. Moulded grating provides strength in both directions, while pultruded grating uses load-bearing bars running in one direction. Support span and loading should therefore be considered when selecting the grating thickness and configuration.

Resin Selection for Chemical Environments

Different environments require different resin options. MuiGrate is available with orthophthalic polyester, isophthalic polyester and vinyl ester resin options, as well as fire-retardant versions. For chemical applications, provide the chemical, concentration or strength and operating temperature so the appropriate resin can be considered.
