Fiberglass Water Tank Applications in Malaysia

Mui Tank fiberglass water tanks are used for a range of water storage requirements in residential, agricultural and commercial settings. Common applications include:

  • Household water storage for residential properties and domestic water supply.
  • Agricultural water storage for farms and other agricultural applications.
  • Fish farming and related aquaculture water storage requirements.
  • Small industrial water storage where additional water storage capacity is required.
  • Rainwater collection and rainwater harvesting systems.
  • General water storage for projects requiring a fiberglass or FRP storage tank.

The appropriate Mui Tank model depends on the required storage capacity, tank configuration, installation space and intended application.

Rainwater Harvesting Tanks in Malaysia

Mui Tank fiberglass water tanks can be used as storage tanks in rainwater harvesting systems for residential, agricultural, commercial and other suitable applications. Mui Fatt offers both closed-top and open-top fiberglass tank configurations, allowing the tank to be selected according to the required storage capacity, available space and installation requirements.

Typical Rainwater Harvesting Setup

A typical rainwater harvesting system collects rainwater from a roof through gutters and downpipes before directing it to the storage tank. Depending on the system design, the setup may include a leaf or debris screen, a first flush or pre-filtration stage, the fiberglass storage tank, an overflow connection and a distribution outlet or pump for the intended use.

The required tank capacity depends on the available collection area, expected rainfall, intended water use, available installation space and the required storage volume. Mui Fatt can advise on a suitable Mui Tank configuration for the project.

Open Top vs. Closed Top for Rainwater Harvesting

Closed-top Mui Tanks are generally the preferred configuration when collected rainwater needs to be protected from direct exposure to the surrounding environment. The enclosed design helps reduce the entry of leaves, dust and other debris and provides a more controlled storage environment.

Open-top Mui Tanks can also be used for rainwater collection where an open configuration is suitable. Because the tank is open, the installation should include appropriate protection against debris and unauthorized access, together with the correct cover or lid for the selected tank.

Debris and Mosquito Protection

Rainwater harvesting systems should be designed to prevent leaves, insects and other debris from entering the storage tank. Roof gutters and tank inlets should use suitable screening or filtration where required, and the tank should be kept properly covered.

Keeping the tank covered also helps prevent mosquitoes from accessing standing water. Any inlet, overflow or other opening should be protected with suitable screening or fittings appropriate for the system design.

Ground and Elevated Installation

Mui Tank fiberglass tanks can be installed on suitable ground-level or elevated supporting structures, provided the support is properly designed for the selected tank and its full water load.

For closed-top FRP tanks, the installation guide specifies an even concrete platform at least 250 mm (10 inches) above ground level, free from stones and debris. Connected pipework should also be independently supported.

Elevated installation may be considered where the system requires additional height for gravity-fed water distribution. The supporting platform or structure must be suitable for the tank, water load and site conditions. Contact Mui Fatt with your site details when an elevated or other project-specific installation is required.

For rainwater harvesting projects, the appropriate Mui Tank configuration depends on the required storage volume, tank type, available space and installation conditions. Contact Mui Fatt Marketing Sdn Bhd for assistance selecting a suitable fiberglass rainwater harvesting tank.

Yes. Closed-top Mui Tanks can be designed for underground installation. Mui Fatt also fabricates FRP septic tanks for buried installation. Contact us with your site details for an underground design.

Fiberglass Tank Installation Requirements

Proper support and handling are essential when installing a fiberglass water storage tank. The tank should be positioned on a suitable, level supporting surface with the entire base properly supported.

Closed Top Tank Installation

  • Use the designated lifting lugs when lifting the tank.
  • Use suitable crane equipment, ropes or nylon slings.
  • Do not lift the tank using side fittings.
  • Lift the tank only when it is empty.
  • Install the tank on an even concrete platform at least 250 mm (10 inches) above ground level.
  • Keep the concrete platform free from stones and other debris.
  • The area surrounding the tank should be fenced to prevent unauthorized access and protect the tank from accidental impact.
  • Support connected pipework and joints with suitable steel or concrete supports.
  • Protect the tank from impact by tools and sharp objects.
  • Keep the tank away from heaters, electric bulbs and other heat sources.

Open Top Tank Installation

  • Install the tank on a suitable, flat and fully supported base.
  • Use a backing plate when installing pipe connections.
  • Use suitable washers for pipe connections.
  • Do not use putty or jointing compound.
  • Cut pipe connection holes cleanly, with smooth edges and without notches.
  • Position the outlet correctly according to the tank and pipework requirements.
  • Use the correct manufacturer-supplied or recommended lid for the tank.

Tank Base Support

A flat and stable base is required to support the tank properly. Open-top tanks should be installed on a suitable flat support such as plywood or concrete, with the base fully supported.

Concrete Slab Requirements

Tank Capacity Slab Specification
Below 600 gallons 100 mm with 1 layer BRC A6
600 to below 2,000 gallons 100 mm with 2 layers BRC A6
2,000 to below 5,000 gallons 150 mm with 2 layers BRC A9
5,000–11,000 gallons 200 mm with 2 layers BRC A9

Pipe and Fitting Installation

Proper pipe support helps prevent excessive load and movement from being transferred to the tank fittings.

  • Support all connected pipes and valves independently.
  • Do not overtighten nuts or tank fittings.
  • Do not knock or impact fiberglass fittings and nozzles.
  • Use suitable fittings for the pipe size and installation.
  • Minimize restraint between interconnected tanks.
  • Allow for movement caused by expansion and contraction where required.

PVC or ABS fittings can be used for smaller pipe connections, while FRP or steel flange fittings are suitable for larger connections according to the tank and piping requirements.

Tank Accessories

Mui Tank fiberglass storage tanks can be supplied with accessories according to the selected tank and installation requirements.

  • Level indicators
  • Internal ladders
  • External ladders
  • Railings
  • Cage ladders

Larger tanks may require additional access and safety equipment depending on tank dimensions and installation conditions.

Fiberglass Water Tank Warranty

Mui Tank fiberglass water storage tanks are covered by:

  • 8-year warranty for outdoor installation
  • 10-year warranty for indoor installation

The warranty applies to cold water storage under the specified warranty conditions. Correct installation and handling are required for warranty coverage.

Fiberglass vs. Polyethylene (PE) Water Tanks

Fiberglass (FRP) and polyethylene (PE) water tanks differ in material, construction, strength, capacity and installation options. PE tanks are manufactured in fixed models and sizes using rotational moulding, while Mui Tank FRP fiberglass tanks can be custom-made to suit the required project capacity, dimensions and installation conditions.

FRP is the stronger material and is suitable for projects where higher structural strength and larger storage capacities are required. Closed-top FRP tanks can also be designed for underground installation, subject to the project and site requirements. PE tanks are not recommended for underground installation.

Capacity is another major difference. Mui Tank FRP fiberglass tanks range from 60 gallons (270 litres) up to 27,680 gallons (approximately 125,800 litres), while Mui Fatt PE water tanks range up to 4,400 gallons.

For more information about the available PE tank models and sizes, see our PE Water Storage Tanks .
